Four steps, no skill required:

2. Make the first pass close. Circle the chain once so it sits near the collarbone, where a choker or princess-length necklace would sit.
3. Let the second pass fall. The remaining length drops lower on the chest. Uneven is correct. The gap between the two loops is what makes it read as intentional.
4. Anchor the ends. On a lariat, pull the ends through the loop or knot the chain once at the base of the throat and let the tails hang. Slide the knot up or down until the drop sits where you want it.

That is the whole technique. If the knot feels bulky, loosen it. Gold chain wants to drape, not grip.
